Direct drives were created to replace traditional servo motors that were coupled with bulky mechanical transmissions. By removing the mechanical parts that show the most wear, direct drives are easier to maintain and have longer lifespans. In addition to a longer life span, direct drives have improved acceleration and precision, and they use less power. Direct drives are able to achieve high efficiency because they are able to transfer power without the friction produced by belts, chains, and gearboxes.
