Housings

As the name suggests, a motor's housing is the enclosure that covers it. and separates it from the rest of the machine or system.

For both AC and DC motors, the housing protects them from moisture, dust and other contaminants. However, the housing also protects other pieces of machinery from the motor itself. Additionally, the housing can act as a mounting mechanism for the motor as needed.
